How to Enhance the Immune System with powerful herbs by Dr. Jimmy Chang, Chinese Herbalist, Pulse Diagnosis Expert

The new coronavirus is making everyone panic and be full of anxiety. So far we have learned that the virus has already mutated and there is no medication for it. What can we do? From the perspective of Chinese Medicine, there is a saying that “no change is the best change.” That means we just need to enhance our own immune system since we know we can’t kill the virus.

From my 40 years of clinical experience, it’s important to first know your body type. I will briefly introduce how to know what type you are by simply using your blood pressure and heart rate.

Let’s say if your highest blood pressure is 145, 150 and bottom is 90, and your heart beat is 70, 80 or even up to 90, you are considered Type 1 with Excess Heat. That means there is too much oxidation in your body or it’s happening too fast. You must also have some inflammation in the body. So it’s not suitable for you to take any tonic herbs. All you need to do to keep your immune system healthy is to exercise, take some vitamins, especially zinc, sleep and eat properly and you should be fine.

The Second body type is that of high blood pressure but slow heart rate. If your blood pressure is 150/90 let’s say, but the heart rate is 50-60, then that means you have poor blood flow or have blood stasis in the body. Your blood is thicker than the rest. If you are in this group, don’t take any tonics either. Whatever you take can’t be delivered because of the poor blood flow. Your best way to stay healthy is to exercise. Also, just eat nutrient rich food and that should be enough.

The Third Type are those of you with low blood pressure, 90/60 but with fast heart rate of 89-90 or even over 100. In Chinese Medicine, you have ‘Yin deficiency’. It’s a type of consumptive condition caused by excessive overwork. You need to replenish the body or else you are easily susceptible to viral attacks. In other words, your immune system is low. You not only need to eat nutrient rich foods but also moisture rich type supplements. I will list the herbs you can take at the end.

Type Four is the group who are extremely deficient, both in Qi and Blood. You are extremely weak and this is reflected in your low blood pressure and slow heart rate. Your top blood pressure number may be 90, bottom number 60, heart beat is 50-60. If you are at a war, you don’t have enough soldiers in the front line for defence. Forget about the new coronavirus, you are susceptible to all sorts of bacteria and germs. Once infected, it’s hard to recover because you are not strong enough, lacking in various cells, globulins, etc. So you must take some tonics to replenish your body. Proper diet, sleep and most importantly your emotions need to be stabilised. Don’t over exert yourself, don’t stay up late. Also, take some vitamins. I want to stress that your diet has to be well rounded. Don’t only eat the foods that you like. With enough sleep, mild exercise, you will have a better chance not to contract any colds, flu, bacterial or viral infections.

These are my suggestions for each of your body type, I will post the tonic formula for you at the end.

For Qi and Blood Deficient Friends (Body types 3 and 4), cook Huang Qi (Astragalus) 20g, Dang Shen (Codonopsis ) 20g, Gan Cao (Licorice) 5g with water and drink it daily.
