Carpal tunnel syndrome is a painful condition related to the median nerve being compressed. The nerve may become compressed because it has swollen or the tendons are inflamed, or both.
CTS (carpal tunnel syndrome) is one of the most common conditions affecting the nerves of the hand. It is estimated that nearly 5% of women and 3% of men suffer from CTS. CTS is more typical for people who are between 45-64 years of age.
Common symptoms are: pain, tingling, burning, or numbness in the palm, hand, wrist and the fingers, especially the thumb and index finger.
According to NHS carpal tunnel syndrome is the “most common and widely known of the entrapment neuropathies in which the body’s peripheral nerves are compressed or traumatized.”
Palm, hand and fingers are controlled by the median nerve. The median nerve also controls the small muscles allowing the thumb and fingers to move. Pressure on the median nerve leads to pain, numbness and weakness in the hand and wrist, which may propagate up into the arm.
The common method of treating CTS is corticosteroid injections but, unfortunately, even If the patient responds well to an injection, symptoms very often return after a few months
In cases of severe carpal tunnel syndrome the standard way of treatment is surgery. Unfortunately, according to NHS data, only about 50% said the procedure had cured them. Also, one needs to keep in mind that, as with any type of surgery, there is always a risk of complications, including infection, post-operative bleeding, nerve injury, and scarring.
Acupuncture Balance Method offers alternative, nonsurgical and very effective treatment of CTS. Most patients with CTS symptoms will notice an improvement in their symptoms during the 1st acupuncture session. In many cases, pain or discomfort goes away completely within minutes.
